Acoustical Insulation

At Payless Insulation, we use a variety of installation methods depending on the acoustical and aesthetic properties our customer is looking to achieve. The spray-on acoustical products we use vary in fiber size and are sprayed onto surfaces (ceilings and walls) with a binding agent to create different surface textures. They are available in a wide variety of standard colors and can be specially matched to any custom color if needed, making them an exposed ceiling insulation. From larger fiber size to smaller, the products we use are:

  • K-13® Spray-On System
  • SonaSpray® “fc” Acoustical Finish System
  • SonaKrete® Acoustical Finish System

Other products that have excellent acoustical properties but are not left exposed are:

  • Celbar® Cellulose Insulation
  • UltraTouch Cotton Insulation by Bonded Logic

Controlling sound and noise transmission through walls, ceilings, and floors can be a challenge in designing and building a project. The insulation products we use contain fibers that absorb sound energy instead of reflecting it. This reduces reverberation time and makes speech and music more intelligible while eliminating unwanted background noise. Our applications greatly improve ambient sound quality in a wide variety of building projects including auditoriums, sports facilities, televisions and sound stages, convention halls, and parking garages.

K-13® Spray-On System

K-13 Spray-On Systems logoK-13® is a total system of recycled natural fibers, chemical treatment, binding system, and application method. The K-13® Spray-On System begins with specially prepared cellulose fibers which are chemically treated. K-13® is applied by a network of licensed applicators. During application, the K-13® fibers are combined with a patented adhesive which allows for a strong, durable coating of desired thickness. K-13® is available in 7 standard colors and special color matching is available.

K-13® insulates by creating dead air spaces between and within its hollow fibers. The fibers are sprayed-in-place which fills in cracks, seams, and voids resulting in a coating that helps reduce air infiltration. Unlike prefabricated insulations, K-13® has no voids or compressed areas to reduce thermal efficiency. The result is a more effective in-place product with exceptionally low heat loss characteristics. The patented adhesive utilized in the installation of K-13® adheres to virtually all common construction materials including metal, wood, concrete, urethane, styrofoam, and glass. This unique adhesive provides unequaled strength allowing applications of 3/4 inch to over 5 inches without mechanical support. This capability provides R-Values from 3 to over 19.

For areas such as indoor pools and ice arenas, K-13® aids in condensation control. The proper combination of K-13 and ventilation prevents condensation on metal, concrete and other surfaces. K-13® actually reduces ventilation requirements, saving in both the ventilation equipment investment and operating cost.

The resilient fibers of K-13® absorb sound energy instead of reflecting it, reducing reverberation time and making speech and music more intelligible. Excessive noise is reduced with the application of K-13 while greatly improving ambient sound quality in a wide variety of building projects including auditoriums, sports facilities, detention facilities, television and sound studios, convention centers and parking garages.

SonaSpray® “fc” Acoustical Finish System

SonaSpray Acoustical Finish logoSonaSpray® is a spray applied acoustical texture designed for a wide range of project types. SonaSpray® provides an attractive, high-performance solution to acoustical and lighting design objectives in both new construction and renovation projects. Typical installations include schools, churches, passenger terminals, libraries, cafeterias, offices, hotels, and condominiums.

SonaSpray® outperforms all other acoustic remediation products on the market today. Noise reductions of 65% to 90% are common results achieved by using this product. SonaSpray® is also Class I fire rated, meeting all local and state code requirements.

The adhesive used to apply SonaSpray® provides a strong, durable and resilient bond. This unique combination of properties provides remarkable durability. SonaSpray® will resist impact and abrasion without cracking or spalling, typical to any cementitious or plaster based materials.

SonaKrete® Acoustical Finish System

SonaKrete Premium Acoustical Finish logoSonaKrete® is a high performance, Class 1 Fire Rated, acoustical finish system that was developed to satisfy the need for a refined, pleasing finish that would be appropriate for both historical restoration and modern design trends. It is available in white, arctic white, black, and specially matched colors, providing for an exceptional range of design options. SonaKrete® conforms easily to complex or irregular surfaces, even though it is not suitable for ribbed or corrugated decks. Engineered for application to virtually any common substrate, SonaKrete® forms a strong durable resilient bond. Typical applications include sanctuaries, fellowship halls, hotel ballrooms, conference areas, offices, museums, libraries and many more.

High-quality installations are assured because ICC has licensed only those contractors who have reputations for outstanding workmanship with other spray acoustic and thermal insulation systems.

Since SonaKrete® is an 80% post-consumer cellulose product, it qualifies for LEED credits. It also resists impact and abrasion without cracking or spalling, typical of traditional plaster and cementitious-based materials.

SonaKrete® is a premium acoustical finish product. Noise reduction of up to 75% can easily be achieved with a smooth plaster-like appearance. SonaKrete® is used primarily where drywall, plaster, brown coat, or any other smooth surface is present or will be installed.

Celbar® Cellulose Insulation

Celbar Spray-On Systems logoCelbar® is a spray-applied insulation product for residential or commercial use. It is a blend of specially prepared cellulose fibers which are organic in nature and treated for adhesion and fire resistance. When sprayed in place, the interlocking fibers result in a mass which produces exceptional sound and thermal properties. As Celbar® is applied to wall, floor, and ceiling cavities, it forms a monolithic coating which seals cracks and holes in the wallboard, around plumbing and electrical outlets, vent ducts and other irregularities. This enables Celbar® to significantly reduce the infiltration of air and sound, increasing the thermal and acoustic performance. A notable advantage of the Celbar® system is its STC performance. Because of the monolithic coverage and sealing action, Celbar assemblies perform closer to lab-tested STC ratings in the field than conventional batt and soundboard systems.

Celbar® provides superior sound transfer control demanded by building designers, owners, and occupants. Celbar® assemblies perform closer to lab-tested STC ratings in the field than do other conventional batt and soundboard systems. This is due to the complete coverage and the sealing action of Celbar®.

UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation by Bonded Logic

UltraTouch Denim Insulation logoBonded Logic Natural Fiber Acoustic Insulation is made from 80% post-industrial recycled denim and cotton fibers. It is thermally bonded, contains no fiberglass, does not itch or cause skin irritation, and offers superior acoustics. The fibers used to manufacture each acoustic sound batt offers effective thermal performance as well as superior noise reduction and sound absorption properties to effectively reduce airborne sound transmission. The insulation is treated with a non-toxic solution that actively inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungi. This same treatment also acts as an excellent fire retardant, giving Bonded Logic Natural Fiber Acoustic Pads a Class-A fire rating, the highest ASTM testing standards for fire and smoke ratings.
